Star Plus is launching a new show Diya Aur Baati Hum (DABH) from today in the 9pm slot. To be aired from Monday to Friday. DABH is a unique love story where the protagonists get married in some unforeseen circumstances, after which love blossoms between them (Do we smell "Bade Acche Lagte Hai" kinda concept?). It is a refreshing story about a man of modest education helping his far well-qualified wife achieve her career goals, braving ridicule from the society. The show replaces ‘Gulaal’ which currently airs on the same slot and promises to make viewers sit up and take note that it’s about time men support their wives in pursuing a career and realizing their potential without they being labeled a ‘Joru ka Gulam’.
Diya Aur Baati Hum, is about a 19-year-old outspoken middle class girl Sandhya from Pushkar and her struggle to fulfill her dreams of becoming an IPS officer. She dreams to break the boundaries of her narrow confined existence of middle class values. The story is also about Sooraj, who is a sweet talker and a self made man. Sooraj runs a sweet shop near his house which is famous. He has been a provider to his family from an early age, hence, he discontinued his studies after passing tenth.
Sooraj and Sandhya get married. As usual, Sandhya is not able to finish her graduation. Soon she is part of the family she does not even know. Though Sandhya’s dream is an important part of her character but she does not carry it on her shoulder all the time. She is a fun spirited young girl who aspires for the sky! This story is about her struggle to fulfill her dream and a journey where she finds help from the most unlikely quarter - a lover who can make it possible.
The major cast includes Anas Rashid essaying the character of Suraj, while a a new face Deepika from Delhi is cast as the female lead. Surbhi Tiwari will be essaying Deepika’s mother Kanchan who’s well educated and attached to her roots and tradition. As the story is based in Pushkar, Rajasthan, she will be playing a cameo of a Marwari woman.
Of the supporting cast, Gautam Gulati has been roped in to play Suraj’s brother whose role is really significant. Apart from these, the famous Rajasthani actress, Neelu is making an entry into the Indian Television and will be seen playing a key role in the show along with Kanika Maheshwari, Ashok Lokhande and Anita Kulkarni in pivotal roles.
Well, though this story does find semblance to Amitabh starrer "Sooryavansham" as its basic premise, how well the story is able to garner a good viewership is to be seen. Also with serials cutting pasting stories from various films, there is no doubt that even DABH will be trying to maintain its ratio. However, unlike serials that start on a fresh premise, there is nothing new in store. To know more, watch tonite as the show unfolds...
