In a move that aims to empower
the handloom weavers of India, The Ministry of Textiles under the leadership of
Smt. Smriti Irani announced#IWearHandloom – a twitter based campaign to
commemorate National Handloom Day on 7th August 2016.
“#IWearHandloom is a campaign to
show support to a community which weaves the diverse fabric of our nation's
rich heritage and bring international fame to our nation. It is a tribute to
women who contribute to 15% of cloth production in India and 95% of world
handloom production; it is saying thank you for their hardwork and dedication
for keeping our traditions alive.I thank the Fashion Design Council of India
along with top designers across the country who have played a critical role in
making this campaign a success and helping mainstream handloom globally.” Smt.

The Fashion Design Council of
India is proud to be a front-runner in this momentous celebration of warp, weft
and weaves.
As a pledge of allegiance towards conscious
consumption of crafts, FDCI President, Mr. Sunil Sethi has appealed to the
entire fashion fraternity to join this noble initiative by the Government of
India. “With more and more trend-setters like you recognizing the value of
hand-woven textiles and finding them relevant, the time is right to set the
stage for a grander spectacle.”
#IWearHandloom is a twitter
campaign that encourages the wearing and sharing of hand-woven garments and
accessories. The campaign begins on 1st August 2016.
