Cannes 2025 unveils its competition line-up: A Blend of Icons, Fresh Voices, and Global Prestige

The stage is set and the red carpet is being rolled out—the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has officially announced its competition line-up, and the world of cinema is buzzing with anticipation. Unveiled Thursday morning, this year’s selection is a vibrant blend of familiar auteurs and emerging voices, promising a festival rich in storytelling, innovation, and artistic depth.

In total, 19 films are slated to compete for the coveted Palme d’Or, though tradition suggests there might be one or two potential last-minute additions ahead of the festival’s grand opening in May. This year's line-up continues the festival’s legacy of spotlighting the most compelling narratives from around the globe, across genres and cultures.

Among the standout names in this year’s competition are acclaimed auteurs Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater, Kelly Reichardt, and Ari Aster—each bringing new works to one of cinema’s most revered stages. The line-up also sees the return of past Palme winners, including Julia Ducournau (who took home the prize for Titane) and the legendary Dardenne brothers, who have twice claimed the award with Rosetta and L’Enfant.

This year’s selection also highlights an encouraging step toward inclusivity, with six films directed by women, just shy of the record seven set in 2023. The official opening night selection will be Leave One Day (Partir un Jour), directed by Amélie Bonnin, setting the tone for what promises to be a memorable edition of the festival.

Equally exciting is the inclusion of a number of new and lesser-known filmmakers, making their debut in competition. This thoughtful curation reflects Cannes' enduring commitment to championing fresh perspectives and nurturing the future of global cinema.

From sweeping dramas & character-driven pieces to experimental storytelling and genre-defying visions, Cannes 2025 is shaping up to be a cinematic event that both honors the legacy of the medium and looks boldly toward its future.

As cinephiles, critics, and creators alike prepare to descend upon the French Riviera, one thing is clear: the magic of Cannes is very much alive, and this year’s line-up is set to be one for the history books.

From Cannes to the Oscars: A Powerful Pipeline
In recent years, the Cannes Film Festival has not only launched critical darlings—it has helped shape the very direction of awards season. The Palme d’Or is widely regarded as one of the highest honors in global cinema, and its influence increasingly resonates far beyond the Riviera.

In the past six years alone, two Palme winners have gone on to win the Oscar for Best Picture: Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite and Sean Baker’s Anora. Prior to that, only Marty (1955) and The Lost Weekend (1945) had achieved the rare double victory.

Other recent Palme recipients that later scored Best Picture nominations include Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall (2023), Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness (2022), Michael Haneke’s Amour (2012), and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life (2011). Last year’s Oscar race also featured several Cannes-launched titles such as The Substance, Emilia Pérez, and The Apprentice.

Star Power & Honors on the Croisette
Outside the official competition, Cannes 2025 is set to shine with some serious star wattage. Tom Cruise will return to the festival with Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning, which will screen out of competition. Cruise was previously honored with an honorary Palme d’Or in 2022 when Top Gun: Maverick soared at the festival.

Adding to the prestige of the opening night, Robert De Niro will receive an honorary Palme d’Or, cementing his legacy as one of cinema’s most enduring icons.

Save the Date
The 78th Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13 to 24, bringing together the very best of global cinema, from ground-breaking debuts to the latest masterworks from established legends. As anticipation builds, one thing is certain: Cannes remains the heartbeat of the film world—and 2025 is already shaping up to be an unforgettable year.

From Kolkata to Moscow: Indian Stop-Motion Film ‘Joker’ revives the spirit of Raj Kapoor’s legacy

Over five decades after Raj Kapoor’s Mera Naam Joker found unexpected success in Russia, the spirit of the Indian clown is set to return to Moscow—this time through a remarkable indie film by director Sourish Dey.

Titled Joker, the 74-minute feature has been officially selected for the 47th Moscow International Film Festival, scheduled to premiere on April 22. The film is based on the real-life story of Bagambar Bera, a professional clown from Nungi, a suburban town near Kolkata, who performs at weddings, birthday parties, and local fairs.

Produced by Mohan Das of Eon Films & Sourish Dey of Shotcut Films, what makes this film extraordinary isn't just its story—it’s how it's told. Unlike conventional films, Joker uses an innovative technique that sets it apart—nearly 60,000 still photographs out of 84,046 photographs were used to create a stop-motion narrative. Crafting an emotional mosaic of a performer’s life, it’s a first for Indian and perhaps global cinema: A full-length feature to employ this method, which offers a deeply textured portrayal of the protagonist’s emotional journey made entirely without traditional videography.

“When I first met Bagambar while researching for a documentary, he began sharing personal stories—his struggles, his craft, his identity as a performer. I realised this needed to be more than a documentary. It had to be a cinematic tribute,” said Dey, who also served as the film’s editor, colourist, and screenwriter.

Reflecting on the project, Mohan Das shared, “While Sourish was working on his earlier film Furut, he told me about his concept for Joker. His choice to use stop-motion was not only artistic and symbolic, but creative and meaningful as well. The still images reflect the fragmented yet enduring spirit of a clown—frozen smiles, silent heartbreaks, and an applause that quickly fades.”

Bagambar Bera, who once appeared in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Uttara and later in Kaushik Ganguly’s Chhotoder Chhobi and Srijit Mukherji’s Dawshom Awbotaar, has spent decades entertaining others with little recognition. His performances, often inspired by Raj Kapoor’s iconic portrayal in Mera Naam Joker, have always carried echoes of sorrow beneath the surface.

“I first watched Mera Naam Joker about 15 years ago. I tried to bring Raj Kapoor’s style into my own acts. I never imagined a film about me would go all the way to Moscow,” said Bera.

However, despite the film's international recognition, Bera won’t be able to attend the festival—he doesn’t yet have a passport. “I plan to apply for one soon. Maybe I can attend future screenings. Some people around me know about the film, but most are still unaware,” he added.

The film was shot over several weeks, with Pramit Das as the principal photographer, supported by Pabel Das and Nilanjan Karmakar. Daily shoots stretched up to nine hours to meticulously capture the thousands of frames required for the unique visual format.

The upcoming Moscow screening of Joker resonates powerfully with cinematic history. In 1972, Raj Kapoor sold the Russian rights to Mera Naam Joker for Rs 15 lakh after it failed at the Indian box office. The film went on to become a massive hit in the USSR, grossing over Rs 17 crore, and cementing Kapoor’s legacy there.

Now, 53 years later, another “joker” from India is poised to leave his mark in Russia—this time, not as a legend, but as a man whose real-life story embodies the silent dignity of the clown.

Non-stop suspense and tension await in ‘Bullet Train Explosion’ as trailer drops

The main trailer for Shinji Higuchi’s Bullet Train Explosion has been unveiled, setting the stage for its thrilling premiere on April 23. This Netflix film reimagines the 1975 classic The Bullet Train with a modern twist. By using real bullet trains and facilities, the film delivers stunningly realistic visuals for a relentless ride of suspense from start to finish.

In Bullet Train Explosion, a bomb is planted on the Hayabusa No. 60, set to detonate if the train’s speed drops below 100 km/h. Conductor Takaichi (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi), along with conductor Fujii (Kanata Hosoda) and driver Matsumoto (Non), must race against time to save the passengers. A tense phone call came into the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center. The caller claims that a bomb has been planted on the Hayabusa No. 60 bound for Tokyo, and that the bomb will explode as soon as the speed of the Shinkansen train drops below 100 km/h. The caller demands 100 billion yen in ransom money to disarm the bomb. The last-minute battle unfolds as the crew, passengers, and railroad workers strive to prevent the explosion within the limited time available. Will the running Hayabusa No. 60 be able to overcome this crisis?

The trailer captures the tension aboard the speeding bullet train, where every second counts. Thanks to the special collaboration with JR East, the film’s realism is unmatched. Adding to the excitement is the new key art by Kyle Lambert, known for his work on Stranger Things and One Piece. His vibrant and dramatic style brings the film’s intensity to life, reminiscent of classic 1970s movie posters.

The film also stars Machiko Ono as Diet member Kagami, Jun Kaname as entrepreneur and YouTuber Todoroki, and Hana Toyoshima as high school student Yuzuki. Takumi Saitoh plays Kasagi, the General Commander at the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center, leading the charge to avert disaster.

Lambert shares, “It is a great honor to be asked by Netflix to illustrate a poster for such a big and exciting new movie. I remember watching the US reimagined movie Speed when I was growing up and I loved all of the action and suspense. For Bullet Train Explosion, I had the opportunity to create a dramatic poster that captures the intensity of the movie with high-speed action and excellent performances from the cast. I painted the artwork in my signature realistic style, with vibrant and eye-catching colors. I’m really happy with the finished artwork and I’m excited for everyone to see the movie!”

New stills have also been released, showcasing the star-studded cast in action. These images highlight the intense moments aboard the Hayabusa No. 60, the challenges faced by the crew, and the high-stakes environment of the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center.

As the train hurtles toward its final stop, what awaits at the end of the line? Don't miss Bullet Train Explosion, streaming on April 23, exclusively on Netflix.
